Research framework
Deployment first robotics research
A framework for judging robots by customer site evidence rather than demo performance.
Core view
A good robot demo and a good robotics business are different things.
Commercial judgment should start with repeat deployment at customer sites, uptime, cost, maintenance, and human intervention rate. Benchmarks matter, but they are not enough.
Checklist
- Is the customer paid, or is this an unpaid pilot?
- Are there repeat orders?
- How many robots are deployed?
- What task is being performed?
- How much human intervention is required?
- Who pays when the robot fails?
- Does the robot fit existing workflows, or does it need a custom showcase environment?
Interpretation
The most important robotics companies may not be the ones with the best launch videos. They may be the ones that can turn narrow, boring tasks into reliable robot labor.
